Wash tattoo 3-5 times daily with mild anti bacterial soap (dial) and warm water scrubbing lightly with fingertips, DO NOT use wash cloth, loufa, etc. 2. Rinse tattoo with cold water, pat dry. 3. Apply thin layer of Curel hand lotion and rub gently into tattoo. 4. Avoid submerging tattoo in water for extended periods, no swimming hot tubs, or bathing (showers are fine), for 2 weeks. 5. Avoid direct sunlight. If you must be in the sun use sunblock (at least spf 45). 6. Call if you have any questions or comments. FACIAL PIERCINGS AFTERCARE Download as a PDF Approximate Healing Time: 2 months to 1 year Congratulations on your new piercing. The most important thing to remember about your new piercing is not to touch it. If you are touching your piercing without washing your hands, you are most likely going to get an infection. First: Wash hands thoroughly, then rinse. Next, pump some liquid antibacterial soap into your hands and work to a lather. With your fingertips, gently massage lather into piercing until scab tissue breaks up from the moisture. After scab tissue is broken up, rotate jewelry through piercing, working the soap into the piercing itself. When thoroughly cleaned, rinse with warm water still rotating jewelry until all residues is washed clean. A saline, or sea-salt, soak is also advisable to promote blood circulation and fight irritation. To make the solution mix a pinch (1/4 tsp) of sea-salt or Epsom salt with 8oz of warm or hot, bottled water. Hold solution (in shot glass or on cotton ball) on piercing for 3 - 5 minutes. Do not change jewelry for at least 2 months. Cartilage piercing is going to take approximately 1 year to heal and should not be changed for at least 3 months. GENITAL PIERCINGS AFTERCARE Download as a PDF Approximate Healing Time 4 weeks to 3 months Genital piercing varies in depth and types of tissues, so the healing time is going to vary with each. As with other piercing, it is very important not to touch the piercing unless you are cleaning it. Clitoral hood and inner labia and will be the easiest as they tend to not scab, being that they are always moist. Outer labia and most male genitalia are going to scab, so they will need slightly more diligent care. 2 -3 times daily, you will need to clean the piercing with a liquid antibacterial soap. First, wash your hands thoroughly. Work the soap to lather in your palm, with your fingertips, gently massage the lather into the piercing until the scab tissue breaks up on its own. After the scab dissolves, rotate jewelry or move back and forth to insure that the soap lather is evenly dispersed inside the piercing. The next step will be to rinse the piercing with clean water, still moving jewelry back and forth to insure that there is no residue still present. With genital piercing, it is advisable to splash some of your own urine onto it as your urine is sterile to your own body. Depending on the piercing, you are going to want to abstain from sexual activity (oral, intercourse, and masturbatory) anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months. The deeper the tissue in the piercing the longer you will want to abstain. Abstinence is advised because, as an open wound, it will be more susceptible to infection and sexually transmitted diseases. You fresh piercing are also going to be easier to tear while healing. Taking a multi-vitamin that includes vitamins B and Zinc will also further facilitate healing. NAVEL AND NIPPLE PIERCINGS AFTERCARE Download as a PDF Approximate Healing Time: 4 - 6 months First and foremost: do not touch you piercing unless you are cleaning it. Touching the piercing without first thoroughly washing your hands almost guarantees heavy irritation and infection. First, wash hands thoroughly, and then pump a liquid antibacterial soap into your palm. Work soap to a lather and gently massage lather into piercing. Continue cleaning in this manner until the scab tissue breaks up from the moisture. After the scab dissolves, move jewelry back and forth or rotate in order to get the soap into the piercing. After completely soaped, continue movement while rinsing the area. Rinse about twice as long as you have just cleaned, to insure that all of the soap is absent. If your jewelry is a barbell, check the beads to make sure they are tight. A saline or sea-salt soak afterward will promote healing and fight irritation. You may buy saline, or make it yourself by using 1 tsp. Sea-salt or Epsom salt to 1 qt of purified water. Use about 4 oz of fluid. Heat to slightly warmer than body temperature then invert cup onto piercing. Let soak for 3 - 5 minutes in solution. You may also use Basting as an irrigator after cleaning. Repeat this 2 - 3 times daily. Regularly taking a multi-vitamin that includes B and Zinc will further facilitate healing. For navels, try to avoid any pant or skirt waistbands that will put any pressure on the piercing as this frequently causes migration. Do not use crèmes and/or ointments on piercing. Avoid oral contact and community waters for no less than 3 months. Do not change jewelry for at least 4 months, preferably longer. TONGUE PIERCINGS AFTERCARE Download as a PDF Approximate Healing Time: 3 - 4 weeks Tongue piercing is usually quite quick in healing. However, there are a few precautions you should take for quicker and more comfortable healing. For the first week: Try to avoid spicy and salty foods as they will increase swelling. Avoid liquid forms of dairy. Dairy produces a high amount of bacteria and may be hard to thoroughly rinse. Drinking alcohol and smoking are also to be avoided as much as possible. They lead to higher risk of infection and irritation. Try to refrain from playing with the jewelry and heavy kissing which may cause ripping in your healing piercing. Sucking is another unwise activity. (Straws, Popsicles, cigarettes, etc.) Sucking will cause a vacuum in your mouth which, in turn, causes your tongue to swell more. Swelling will normally last 2 - 4 days. To reduce swelling, chew on ice or simply let it melt in your mouth. (No sucking), take ibuprofen and drink cold water. Try to abstain from oral sex for the first 3 weeks. Your piercing will still be an open wound for this period, and will be easily susceptible to infection and sexually transmitted diseases. During the healing period, you will need to diligently rinse each and every time you eat, drink, or smoke. Basically, any time anything goes in your mouth, you wash it. Rinsing solutions should be antiseptic mouthwashes diluted 50 per cent with water. Alcohol-free mouthwashes are also advisable, but not completely necessary.
